HBH’s young volunteers keep life interesting

One of the key principles of the Eden Alternative adopted by HBH Senior Living is overcoming loneliness and isolation for older people. It aims to imbue daily life with variety and spontaneity and provide ample opportunities for companionship – especially with animals and children.

At HBH, we not only have a resident cat to keep our residents company, we’re fortunate to have many visits from young people in our community. The Howick Brownies come each year to sing to our residents – especially the songs of yesteryear, which are always a huge hit.

In August last year, several students from Howick Intermediate visited our Rest Home residents playing cards and teaching our residents a few new games. As well as that, students from Southwell School in Hamilton also spent a lovely day with us, performing and singing favourite ‘oldies’ for our residents.

The St Kentigern College Pipes and Band visit is always popular – they play bagpipe pieces in our courtyard. What’s more, St Kent’s students also come twice a week to play games, converse and share stories – and even provide the odd manicure!

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the many local schools that take the time to volunteer and visit us.  You truly fill our lives with laughter, fun and spontaneity and HBH Senior Living wouldn’t be such a special place without you!
